MAMPUKAH MENGANTARKAN PARIWISATA
PADA SUSTAINABILITY?

Myrza Rahmanita

Abstract

Tourism Certification Programme (TCP) is a relatively new movement claim to help business to implement sustainable programmes and display their credentials to the consumers. Companies show such commitment to the environment attract new market seg-ments, reduce costs and build company, community and investor confidence. TCP can save expenses by implementing environmental policies that can make up all fees many times over. HCIMA, for ex-ample, estimate that those hotels joining their Hospitable Climates Partnership Initiative can expect to reap energy savings of between 10 and 40 per cent. Many businesses also have become more aware that environmental management programme can cut utility cost by up to 25% (HCIMA, 2000; HEI, 1996 in Synergy, 2000). Furthermore, according to a survey undertaken by auditing com-pany SGS (SGS, 1998, National Consumer Council), some 75% of tourism professionals consider that the lack of an environmental standard can have a negative impact on corporate image. The concept and its two basic approaches used (Process and Performance) becomes more widely known and accepted with its advantages and disadvantages. However, not all certification programmes are as effective as they claim to be. To gain from these conditions, market should be more aware about the value behind every initiative.
